The American Red Cross and Miami-Dade County Department of Emergency Management & Homeland Security (DEM&HS) are inviting South Floridians to get ready for hurricane season at Storm Prep Expo 2008, which takes place May 31 from 10 am to 7 pm and June 1 from 11 am to 7 pm at the Miami Beach Convention Center, Hall C, 1901 Convention Center Drive, Miami Beach.
Storm Prep Expo 2008 is a not-for-profit event aimed at raising hurricane preparedness awareness among Miami-Dade County residents. Miami-Dade County has not been affected by a major hurricane in the past three years. Experts are predicting an active 2008 hurricane season, so it is important that residents remain ready.
"June 1 marks the beginning of the 2008 Hurricane Season. As we all know, the best defense against hurricanes is to plan and prepare early. Even though Miami-Dade County is better prepared than ever to provide services to those residents and visitors in need before and after a hurricane strikes, government cannot do it all alone," said Miami-Dade County Mayor Alvarez. "We continue to urge residents to prepare their hurricane disaster kits and plan to be self sufficient for at least 72 hours following a storm."
Dozens of local, state and federal agencies will be on hand at Storm Prep Expo 2008 to inform residents about available services. Vendors will be selling hurricane supplies and conducting major giveaways, including free generators, vacations and other great prizes. Admission is free to the public.
Special guests include former National Hurricane Center (NHC) Director Max Mayfield, current NHC Director Bill Read, WFOR-TV CBS 4 hurricane specialist Bryan Norcross, and others. Storm Prep Expo 2008 will also feature a family zone with fun activities for children, as well as a special appearance by the Florida Marlins Mermaids, police K-9 demonstrations, and more.
Storm Prep Expo 2008 is being presented by Miami-Dade County and the American Red Cross Greater Miami & The Keys. Other presenting sponsors include Univision, WFOR-TV CBS 4, My 33, Amor 107.5, La Kalle 98.3, Radio Mambi, WQBA 1140, News Radio 610 WIOD, Clear Channel, The Home Depot, City of Miami Beach, City of Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce, Hands on Miami, Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau, and The Miami Herald.
